Oratorio di San Lorenzo, thel Carmenere by Inama

A vertical tasting dedicated to the pure Carmenere produced on the Berici Hills by the well-known Veneto winery was the occasion to present the path taken from the beginning, the 2017 preview and a 2018 still in refinement.

The history of the Inama winery has always been marked by the strong personality of Stefano Inama, who in the early 1990s took over its management from his father Giuseppe, who had founded it in the 1950s. A personal style of interpretation of the area, revolutionary, that led him to debut with a Sauvignon rather than a Soave that would come the following year. Vineyards on Colle Foscarino among the most renowned in the Soave area, an innovative use of wood and fermentation give a strong personality to the wines in a style that would become a reference in those years. 

In 1998, a passion for red wines led Stefano to invest in the Colli Berici area, in Lonigo, a very calcareous soil with a large amount of iron; here Bradisismo was born, a classic Bordeaux blend with 30% Carmenere, a little-known grape variety that has almost disappeared, but has been present in the area for 300 years. Stefano fell in love with Carmenere, and when he managed to buy, in two tranches, a 12-hectare plot in a single body in an isolated and magnificent place, dominated by a small chapel dedicated to San Lorenzo, he decided to plant only Carmenere and dedicated a wine to it, Oratorio di San Lorenzo, whose first "official" vintage was 2006. Only 9,000 bottles a year are born from all this immensity, and we present some of the vintages, having participated in an interesting vertical tasting.

The most significant changes in the winery were the entry of Lorenzo Manfredi (Simonit & Sirch school) in 2009 as head agronomist and in 2017 the collaboration with an internationally renowned consultant such as Stéphane Derenoncourt, a great interpreter of Bordeaux wines. In the meantime, the third generation, represented by sons Alessio, Andrea and Luca, entered the winery: we enthusiasts are in good hands. They created a new Soave wine: I Palchi, which would be nothing but the terraces of the area, only 2 vintages produced for now the 2019 and 2020, different from each other but both splendid. Good blood doesn't lie.
 

Colli Berici Riserva Oratorio di San Lorenzo 2006 

92/100 - € 60

100% Carmenere. Matura in barrique nuove e usate per circa 18 mesi. Rubino intenso. Olfatto su note fruttate di more, spezie, leggermente balsamico e un tocco di kirsch. Trama fitta ed elegante con tannini equilibrati e una progressione rilassata che dà un finale elegante e persistente. Torna una nota floreale.
 

Colli Berici Riserva Oratorio di San Lorenzo 2009 

91/100 - € 60

100% Carmenere. Matura in barrique nuove e usate per circa 18 mesi. Rubino cupo. Olfatto fresco con qualche nota verde, tanto pepe, arancia gialla. Vino ancora nervoso con tannini di qualità ma croccanti e la progressione risulta centrale, leggermente nervosa; nel finale abbiamo ancora note di bosco invernale.
 

Colli Berici Riserva Oratorio di San Lorenzo 2011 

94/100 - € 50

100% Carmenere. Matura in barrique nuove e usate per circa 18 mesi. Rubino cupo intenso. Olfatto intenso su frutto piccolo rosso e nero, balsamico e una leggera spezia gialla. Trama intensa con tannini ben integrati con la progressione succosa e rilassata per un finale persistente e avvolgente su note di grafite.

94/100 - € 50

100% Carmenere. Matura in barrique nuove e usate per circa 18 mesi. Rubino intenso brillante. Olfatto su note di kirsch, cenni di rabarbaro, leggermente balsamico con ancora il frutto piccolo nero e rosso. Trama fitta con tannini di classe, bella progressione nervosa ed elegante che ci prepara al finale succoso e saporito. Molto persistente con ritorni speziati caldi.
 

Colli Berici Riserva Oratorio di San Lorenzo 2017 

94/100 - € 90

100% Carmenere. Matura in barrique 50% nuove e 50% usate per 15 mesi. Rubino intenso e cupo. Olfatto che oscilla tra note verdi, eucalipto e toni speziati. Trama compatta nervosa con tannini croccanti ma ben compensati, ne deriva una progressione giovanile e succosa. Coerente il finale.
 

Colli Berici Riserva Oratorio di San Lorenzo 2018 

96/100 - € 100

100% Carmenere. Matura in barrique nuove e di secondo passaggio per 20 mesi. Rubino classico scuro e brillante. Olfatto intrigante tra note di grafite, cenere, frutto rosso e nero di sottobosco, accenni speziati. Trama fitta, elegante, con ottimi tannini, grande progressione saporita e scorrevole e un finale giovanile, coerente e di gran classe.
