Aged Custoza? Yes, thank you

Some people still think that white wines are not for aging. Of course, not all of them are, depending on the type and the producer, but you can get very pleasant surprises.
Who said that white wines age badly? We refute those who say that by offering you two whites from the Lake Garda area, specifically from Custoza, an appellation where the palette of grapes provided for in the regulations makes it possible to produce truly fascinating whites. Some producers, we have selected Monte del Frà and Menegotti, know how to propose an "aging" version that gains a lot from a prolonged stay in the bottle.
A reality that began in the late 1950s; now the Monte del Frà winery covers 202 hectares of vineyards scattered between Lake Garda and Valpolicella Classica; the style changes depending on the wines, but the coherence and relevance to the various territories is very close thanks to the rigorous choices in the cellar and in the vineyard that the Bonomo family makes to enhance the prized crus to which they belong. These include the Ca' del Magro vineyard, of morainic origin, with limestone, clay, gravelly and sandy soil, from which a Custoza Superiore is made that is such in name and in fact.
The Menegotti winery was also founded in the mid-1950s through the efforts of Antonio, a factor of Count Mendini. In the 1970s his sons Vittorino and Giorgio bought the first vineyards, and in 1972 the first production under the family label began. Today Andrea and Antonio, grandsons of the first Antonio, produce about 200,000 bottles and manage 25 hectares between Valeggio, Custoza and Santa Lucia ai Monti. In addition to the typical wines of these areas, Chiaretto, Custoza and Bardolino, due to Uncle Vittorino's passion and will, they have been producing classic method bubbles since the early 1970s.
