Volcanic wines, but from Vulture

Vulture Vigna Piano dell'Altare Cantine del Notaio

We often talk about the saltiness, freshness and complexity of white wines from volcanic soils but we often forget that Mount Vulture is an ancient volcano.

By now we have seen it: volcanic soils know how to give wines that quid that makes them fascinating, and we have many soils of volcanic origin in Italy, although Etna and Campi Flegrei immediately come to mind. Actually, still in the south, we have another great (but extinct) volcano and that is Vulture, in Basilicata.

Here-although the best known and most appreciated wines are Aglianico-based reds-the volcanic soils, combined with a very cold climate, manage to give even the white wines very personal characteristics, of absolute pleasantness. It is precisely the cold climate and the and strong temperature ranges that mean that the white grape varieties cultivated are the most varied: from those more akin to neighboring regions, such as Malvasia, Moscato, Fiano, Falanghina or Greco, to Nordic ones such as Gewürztraminer and Müller Thurgau, to international ones such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon. All connoted by excellent aromatic intensity.

We propose two, from two of the most relevant wineries in the area: Re Manfredi and Cantine del Notaio.

For the Vulture area, Re Manfredi is a large winery, with its more than one hundred hectares of vineyards. In reality, it is a medium-sized entity that belongs to the Gruppo Italiano Vini, a large constellation of companies that go to form the largest winemaking entity in Italy. Alongside the classic as well as indispensable Aglianico del Vulture, the company also produces a delicious white wine.

Cantine del Notaio is a historical reality for the territory, one of those always at the top to which the success of Aglianico del Vulture outside the area is due. Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti, then, puts soul and great passion into his work, and his wines are always extraordinary and full of personality. All bear the name of a notary practice, in memory of the activity of his ancestors.
