Drink white, drink Lazio
Malvasia puntinata, bombino and passerina. Typical Lazio grapes that give saline and easy-drinking wines.
The white wines of Latium do not have a great reputation, and this is unfortunately due to speculation that was done in the past, when the wines of the Castelli Romani flooded the Capital with little quality but large volumes, partly because of the Cantine Sociali that collected grapes from a myriad of small conferring wineries and were content to turn them into wines that were at best correct. It must be said that we were in an era when few people cared about the quality of wines.
Over the years the situation has changed, and this is thanks both to small private entrepreneurs, who have become more focused on quality, and to the Cooperative Wineries, which have realized that one cannot lump everything together and that it is convenient for them in the first place to create at least one product line in the higher range.
Let us bring as an example of this discourse two wines that for this very reason are at the antipodes. The First is Roma Doc Vinea Domini, the "top" line from the famous Gotto d'Oro winery in Marino, Castelli Romani, which has been around for a few years. Classic blend of Malvasia puntinata and Bombino. The second, on the other hand, is from the Frosinone area and is Marcella Giuliani's Passerina del Frusinate Dante, a wine from an indigenous Central Italian grape variety that is experiencing rediscovery by producers and consumers.
A number of respectable wines are offered under the Vinea Domini label, some traditional, others from international varieties. The highlights are represented above all by the Roma Doc appellation and in particular by the white version of this wine, which is well made. However, the range of wines is wide and characterized by an appreciable quality/price ratio.
Marcella Giuliani is a lady who strongly felt the "call of her roots" and dedicated herself to the winery that comes from a large latifundium estate owned by the family since 1870. Over the years, the business has focused mainly on tree crops (vineyards, olive groves) and related products, limiting the use of pesticides and fertilizers to organic certification.
