valpolicella veneto

Valpolicella has always represented fine drinking, and if we exclude the drifts that risk causing the red to lose its identity, we find some classics that are a joy to the palate.

Speaking of classics, we cannot ignore two families that represent two pillars of the area: Speri and Allegrini.

Going to San Pietro in Cariano, we find a family that has been making wine in Valpolicella for 7 generations. A winery, Speri's, that represents classicism, albeit with a few clever, cautiously innovative touches that bring it in step with the times. Strictly family-run, with Alberto and Giuseppe Speri in the cellar, and certified organic since 2015. Five well-made labels, the most prestigious from the vineyard of Sant'Urbano, a place-name located in Fumane, a classic area. Not to be forgotten, however, is the Valpolicella Classico, ideal for the everyday table.

In Fumane, also in the classic zone, we find Allegrini, a major label for Veronese wines, with a wide and articulate range. Initially the cru that represented the flagship of the company's range was Fieramonte, whose production had been interrupted in 1985 due to problems with the vineyard. After 10 years since its replanting, the decision was made to revive the historic reserve with the 2011 vintage, with a great result. The other top products are the Amarone Classico, the red La Poja, from Corvina grapes only, and La Grola, from Corvina and Oseleta, rich and enveloping. Of course, however, we cannot neglect, for an excellent daily drink, the Valpolicella Classico itself. The family's estates also include a splendid Renaissance villa, Villa della Torre, which is really worth a visit (or a stay).

These are the two wines we recommend, just click on the name to find out the score and price and to read the description.
