Reds for the summer

It is not necessarily the case that the only way to drink in summer is to throw yourself on white wines or bubbles. There are also several types of red wines suitable for drinking cold, at temperatures around 12°C. We point out 4 wines that are also enjoyable in summer.

There are those who just can't stand white wines, or can't drink them because they generally contain more sulfur dioxide than reds, which can give someone intolerant to the substance a galling headache. The problem is exacerbated during summer periods, when a cool drink is more palatable than one served at room temperature. And among wines only whites or sparkling wines, say the sacred texts, can be drunk chilled.

For those who know the wine world well, this is not exactly the case. There are many red wines that can, indeed should, be served chilled almost as much as whites, and sometimes as much as those. These are the young and light reds, with little tannin and an obvious acidity component. And many Italian wines, in different regions, are just like that. A few names? Pelaverga di Verduno and Grignolino d'Asti or Monferrato Casalese in Piedmont, almost all Lambrusco wines between Emilia and Lombardy, Bardolino in Veneto, Schiave, Lago di Caldaro, Santa Maddalena and Meraner Hugel in Alto Adige, Chianti in Tuscany, Lacrima di Morro d'Alba in the Marche, Ottavianello in Puglia, Cerasuolo di Vittoria in Sicily, some Piedirosso on Vesuvius and in the Campi Flegrei, and that's just to name the first names that come to mind.

All reds that love low serving temperatures, which can also be easily paired with seafood dishes, preferably with a little tomato in the recipe, which can also be used as an aperitif. Luigi Veronelli, perhaps the greatest wine writer Italy has had, described the pairing of a fragrant fried shrimp and squid with dry Lambrusco di Sorbara as a "love marriage." And he was not wrong at all.

So let's equip ourselves with a few bottles of red wines for the summer, which moreover will not force you to see your credit card melt, given the reasonable prices. However, they will accompany you during the torrid months of July and August, without having the pretension of being great, but with the certainty of being very pleasant, and that is no small thing. Here I suggest four, hoping to have given you some good tips.
