Abruzzo Wine Experience 2023: the Abruzzo model

The great tasting of regional wines at the Wine Experience organized by the Consorzio Tutela Vini d’Abruzzo demonstrated the qualitative growth of Abruzzo oenology.
Strongly desired by the Consortium for the Protection of Abruzzo Wines, the annual Abruzzo Wine Experience event demonstrated to national and international opinion leaders the extraordinary growth in the level of the area's wines, which are increasingly appreciated in Italy and abroad, with the region asserting itself as one of the most dynamic, with viticulture that has always been present between the Adriatic Sea and the Gran Sasso d'Italia and Majella massifs, within which three National Parks and more than ten national and regional reserves unfold.
The centuries-old production of wine, attested by written accounts such as that of Polybius, reveal the magic of a past rich in tradition, driven by the historic fame of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, which has always been the standard-bearer of regional oenology in the world, and of a present that is the result of a modern development model, with a new generation of oenologists and wine entrepreneurs who place the region at the forefront, thanks to wineries that look with a keen eye on the environment and biodiversity.
A strength, this one, that with the 2023 vintage is strengthened through the introduction of the "Abruzzo Model," a novelty for the entire Italian wine world, with the Abruzzo region pioneering a new way of conceiving the organization of appellations of origin and PGIs, which is simpler and at the same time more detailed.
The guiding principle of the simplification includes the addition to the five DOCs-Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Doc, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Doc, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Doc, Abruzzo Doc (which also includes wines made from the indigenous grape varieties Pecorino, Passerina, Coccociola and Montonico) and Villamagna Doc-of a single Igt: Terre d'Abruzzo, instead of the current eight, so as to strengthen the regional identity of all wines (somewhat as has happened in Sicily).
A "Superior" mention was also introduced for the four regional Denominations. With the "Abruzzo Model," moreover, it is intended to maintain regional production at its real production potential, to ensure social, economic and environmental sustainability of the Abruzzo wine system.
In the setting of Tenuta Coppa Zuccari in Città Sant'Angelo, 90 producers gathered with more than 300 wines for tasting, and two masterclasses were held, one of which was dedicated to Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, which in 2010 achieved DOC recognition for the wine's very close link with the territory as a specific identity. A wine characterized by its cherry color, very eclectic in pairings, thanks to the presence of acidity and structure. The Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo appellation area encompasses the entire coastal hills and foothills of the region, with vineyards extending in municipalities in all four provinces of Abruzzo: Chieti, L'Aquila, Pescara and Teramo that are below 600 meters.
