Idda vini dell'Etna joint venture Gaja Graci

A few years ago the announcement of the joint-venture between Angelo Gaja and Alberto Graci for the production of wines on Etna was made. The first two wines are now on the market.

They were tasted by Federico Latteri, historical collaborator of Cronache di Gusto, our partner for tastings in Sicily for the Essential Guide to the Wines of Italy.

The arrival of Angelo Gaja, news given first by Cronache di Gusto, was one of the most important events in the recent history of Etna wine. The attention from a producer of such great and recognized prestige has confirmed the undisputed value of the volcano's terroir, strengthening its image and consolidating its position among the most interesting areas in the world for wine production.

The joint venture with Graci and the purchase of vineyards on the south-west side were immediately followed by the first harvest, 2017. The new company is called Idda, a name recently revealed which is a clear reference to the way the ethneians call the volcano they consider a woman. Finally, after a few years of waiting, we tasted the wines, a white and a red wine that has only been on the market for a few days, which we tell you about below.

Idda-Sicilia-Bianco-2018-Gaja-GraciSicilia Bianco 2018 Idda

Carricante grapes, that were harvested at the end of September. The vinification involves pressing the whole bunches and, after a cold decantation, fermentation which takes place partly in 15 hectolitre oak casks and partly in stainless steel tanks. The wine was bottled after a year of aging in mid-October 2019.

It has a beautiful, bright straw yellow colour. The nose impressed us with its precision to such an extent that it can be defined as "geometric". We initially find fine and intense floral scents with broom in evidence. After a while a buttery hint of fresh hazelnut emerges that enriches the bouquet. On the palate it is lively, snappy, salty and long. This dynamic profile balances the consistency of the wine very well, creating a great balance. It is a good and well made white in which we recognize the Gaja style in the attention to detail.

Price 30-35 €.

Idda Sicilia Rosso 2017 Gaja Graci EtnaEtna Rosso 2017 Idda

Nerello Mascalese grapes with a small part of Nerello Cappuccio. Both the fermentation and the two years of ageing take place partly in 50 hectolitre oak vats and partly in cement tanks. Soft pressing is carried out during maceration on the skins. The wine was bottled in mid-October 2019.

The color is very typical, ruby red a little bit flat. It is well defined, clean and sharp on the nose with hints of cherry, small fruits mostly red and a subtle and delicate spice. The sip is fresh, it relaxes with a well articulated progression and closes with a savoury note and considerable length. The tannins, very well extracted, finely caress the palate. An elegance and harmony that is difficult to find in a 2017 wine, a problematic vintage due to heat and drought. In addition, there is a more pronounced territoriality than the white. Still very young, but with considerable potential, it should be followed in its evolution to appreciate all its qualities. Very good.

Price 35-40 €.
