The enchanted landscape of Camigliano

Camigliano il Borgo al tramonto

Aside from being an established Montalcino estate, Camigliano is also a medieval hamlet that was restored by the Ghezzi family.

Camigliano was a hamlet before becoming a wine estate, or perhaps better a hamlet-estate, one that seems unreachable no matter from which direction you arrive in Montalcino. However, visiting Camigliano is a wonderful experience, an authentic full emersion into the Montalcino reality, an intriguing return to both the area’s remote and more recent past.

Camigliano was on the old road to Grosseto and hosted fortifications in defense of Montalcino. Little remains of these fortifications but the hamlet’s architectural plan remains intact. The village also has an interesting and mysterious symbol: a camel (the same used by the estate). This appears to be rooted in the influence of the Church and the fact that pilgrims would pass through here on their way to Grossetto, from where they would board ships bound for the Holy Land. If you have a four-wheel-drive vehicle you can still take the dirt road towards Grossetto, a fascinating excursion.

In recent years, the hamlet has improved with the return of typical food being offered in a medieval setting with modern services. The hamlet was restored by the Ghezzi family who acquired it in 1957, back when Montalcino was still a medieval village and Brunello had not yet become as famous as it is now. While originally from Milan, the Ghezzi family consider Montalcino to be their home. Gualtiero Ghezzi and his wife are very proud of their creation and the recent restoration of the winery, totally underground, has opened new and wonderful prospects for the hamlet.

The wines are reliable, offered at very reasonable prices and their quality has improved steadily. All their production is organic and the winemaking style is traditional with particular attention paid during harvest.

Brunello di Montalcino Paesaggio Inatteso 2015

92/100 - € 50

Made with Sangiovese grapes from a two-hectare vineyard and matured for at least 30 months in Slavonian oak barrels. The wine has a slightly garnet, ruby color and a clear and intense bouquet in which the notes of red fruit evolve into those of summer underbrush, blond tobacco and floral hints. The intense mouthfeel is elegant and progressive without excessive extracts but juicy and flavorful as is the luminous and very persistent finish.

Gamal 2019

88/100 - € 14

Made from Vermentino grapes and matured on the lees in stainless steel for several months. A classic straw-yellow color and an aroma with notes of medicinal herbs and yellow peach that are very typical and Mediterranean. The mouthfeel is nervous, flavorful and rewarding with a progression that benefits from a touch of freshness. The finish is flavorful and intense.
