Tony Rissetti

A Falanghina cru that Tony Rossetti specially selected to give it a longer life. A classy white that wants to be expected.

The tongue of land that stretches from the Garigliano bridge to Mount Massico, marking the border between Latium and Campania, is the Ager Falernum, the extraordinary and particularly fertile territory, known since antiquity for the production of the legendary Falerno wine, stored and transported by the Romans all over the world in terracotta amphorae by sea. The ports of Sinuessa (present-day Mondragone) and Gianola (present-day Minturno), bear witness to this and where traces of Roman ships loaded with the precious cargo can still be found. An agricultural land in the province of Caserta, which contrasts the wonder of the sea with wide white beaches with a countryside dotted with small, quiet villages with lush vegetation.

It is in the center of Casale di Carinola, on the southern slope of Mount Massico, that Bianchini Rossetti, in the historic tufa winery, has been producing wines since 2000 from the 5-hectare vineyard at 300 meters above sea level, on the ancient route traveled by Saul of Tarsus on his journey to Rome. History, faith and myth are intertwined with the exploits of the mansion/cellar dating back to the 1800s, where the ancestors of Tony Rossetti - the current owner - produced wine for family use from the tuff soils positioned on a natural canyon carved by the passage of time.

After three generations, Tony replanted the vineyards with Aglianico, Piedirosso and Falanghina grapes (authorized by the Falerno del Massico production regulations) and resumed the winemaking tradition of his ancestors. There are currently five wines produced, divided into two lines: Mille880, more approachable, steel-only (Falerno del Massico white and red, a Campania Rosato) and Saulo in oak (one is Falerno del Massico Rosso Riserva), which spark an interest in the area that lies on the slopes of the extinct volcano of Roccamonfina, where the contemporaneity of Falerno del Massico runs along the timeline of history.

Evidence of this is Saulo Bianco, which started as a Falanghina cru project in the 2019 vintage (a few hundred bottles), immediately playing a different register than previous productions, with fermentation and aging in French oak barrels and release from the cellar at least 18 months after the harvest. This is a wine that likes to make itself wait, tinged with classy whites in the Campania region's wine palette, embodying the Mediterranean through the interweaving of aromas, richness of the sip, and well-marked tension and savoriness.

Here are three vintages of this fine wine, click on the name to open the tasting notes.
