Renitens, the emblem of Resistenti Nicola Biasi

If there is a champion of Piwi in Italy, it is winemaker Nicola Biasi. So much so that he has formed a network of companies focused on resistant grape varieties and created a wine from the union of grapes from the six founding companies: the Renitens.

In the beginning there was the young Friulian winemaker Nicola Biasi, strong with several experiences in Italy and abroad, who decided to devote a big chunk of his efforts to Piwi, the resistant vines resulting from crosses by pollination between Vitis Vinifera and other Vitis mostly of American and Asian origin, from which they receive the genes for resistance to the main fungal diseases, especially powdery mildew and downy mildew. Piwi, in fact, is the international acronym that sums up the German word Pilzwiderstandfähige, which, when translated, means precisely fungus-resistant vines. "Resistant vines are the only real way toward environmental friendliness and sustainability in viticulture," Biasi convinced us, "as they reduce the need for treatments in the vineyard to almost zero.  He is, of course, not the only one who is convinced of this, so much so that some of the companies he is a consultant to have decided to follow him in creating a network of companies that sees them united in the name of Piwi, companies in the Triveneto region (where the culture of Piwi vines is most widespread) that have decided to produce wines that are truly sustainable. Precision viticulture and painstaking winemaking at the service of new varieties and consumers.

The first, symbolic gesture that this network of companies made was to produce a white wine totally from resistant vines, as an assemblage of 8 different wines produced by the 6 founding companies: Bronner, Soreli, S.Kretos, Solaris, Sauvignier Gris, Johanniter, Fleurtal and S.Rytos the varieties used, in different percentages. A journey through six territories starting from the Friulian Riviera and Collio moving to the hills of Treviso, the foothills of Veneto, passing through Valbelluna, and ending in the Dolomites of Trentino.

As we write about it, two more wineries have joined this network, so it is possible that next year the composition of the wine will change, but the goal of quality (happily achieved with this first vintage) and the desire to communicate how resistant vines can represent the viticulture of the future remains firm.

Vari vitigni resistenti, divisi tra le 6 aziende della rete: 20% Soreli, 20% S.Kretos, 13% Solaris, 10% Sauvignier Gris, 3% Fleurtal, 2% S.Rytos. Bronner (22%) e Johanniter (10%) maturano in legno. Giallo intenso. Olfatto ampio e variegato con note di albicocca, pesca, mango e lime accompagnate da sensazioni floreali, zagara e biancospino, e di ortica. Trama fitta succosa ampia con una progressione avvincente e verticale. Sapido. Finale molto persistente ampio, e in corrispondenza olfattiva.
