Rocca delle Macie Sergio Zingarelli

For the fiftieth anniversary (plenty because of Covid) since the release of the famous films They Called Him Trinity (1970) and They Kept Calling Him Trinity (1971), Rocca delle Macìe has made big celebrations and launched a dedicated Grand Selection.

Those who have never seen the movie They Called Him Trinity raise your hand. It is not just a parody of the westerns that raged in cinemas around the world until the 1970s, but an ironic and lighthearted take on the spaghetti western, which itself was an all-Italian take on the genre. A film that in its own way was epoch-making, a true cult movie. It also had the merit of launching, as well as a style, what has become an enduring couple of Italian cinema, Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. It was released in 1970 thanks to the insight of Italo Zingarelli, a film producer, director and screenwriter, who sensed the potential of that script and found the right performers, masterfully directed later by director Enzo Barboni, under the pseudonym E.B. Clucher.

Not everyone knows, however, that that same Zingarelli was also the founder of the Chianti-based winery Rocca delle Macìe, and precisely to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film's release (with the understandable delay due to the pandemic) Sergio Zingarelli, Italo's son at the helm of the winery, together with his siblings Sandra and Fabio, decided to launch a wine dedicated to the event: the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Lo chiamavano Trinità 2016 drawn in only 1970 magnums (to underline the year of the film's release). The provenance of the Sangiovese grapes from which the wine is made is from the first estates Italo purchased in 1973, Le Macìe and Sant'Alfonzo, in the Castellina in Chianti area.

Not having been able to attend the various evenings organized by the Zingarelli family for the tribute to the film, to his father Italo and for the launch of this new wine, I recently remedied the situation, having tasted it as part of VinoVip Cortina, the beautiful event organized by Civiltà del Bere and which sees the Gotha of national wine production gathered in Cortina. The Zingarelli family, which provided the film restoration - in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna - not only of the first Lo chiamavano Trinità, but also of the highly successful sequel (it remains the most-watched film in the history of Italian Cinema) Continuavano a chiamarlo Trinità, released the following year, proposed its screening on the evening of the event.

A Grand Selection was also dedicated to this second film, obviously in 1971 Magnum.

Rocca delle Macìe
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Lo chiamavano Trinità 2016

98/100 - € 200, solo 1970 Magnum

100% Sangiovese. Matures in 25-35 hl French oak barrels for about two years.  Firm ruby. Intense fruitiness on the nose, with blackberries, black cherries and sour cherries, violet floral, hints of spice, a hint of gunpowder (will it be the suggestion of the movie?). Mouth dense and balanced by a good acid shoulder, juicy and vibrant, very pleasant drinking and very persistent finish. Truly a great wine.
