Angeli di Varano, the new Conero generation

Conero is a little-known area but one that offers some pleasant surprises, like the estate of Lorenzo and Matteo Chiucconi.
Lorenzo and Matteo Chiucconi are two, young brothers. The first studied economics and the second is an enologist and ten years ago they decided to pump new life into their family’s estate. It is situated in Varano, in the heart of the Marche region’s wonderful Conero Park, not far from the provincial capital Ancona and overlooking the most beautiful beaches in the region: Sirolo and Portonovo. Lorenzo and Matteo decided to initiate production with Rosso Conero and Conero Riserva, the area’s two top appellations.
Aside from being a magnificent promontory overlooking the sea, Monte Conero is the northern-most area for cultivating Montepulciano, which is often made into a single-grape wine. The Montepulciano here is not as sweet as that found in Ascoli but is more flavorful and it can express its full potential when grown in the chalky soil of Conero in which case it is probably the regional red wine with the greatest potential.
The red wines from Angeli di Varano are already very good and, above all, representative of the aromas in the area, with notes of black cherry that intermingle with those or aromatic herbs. In the future, it will not be difficult for them to achieve excellence. The estate also has a nice bed and breakfast.
One last thing: if you are addicted to Facebook, take a peek at their engaging estate page that is a kind of small, sector press review.
Rosso Conero Primo di Tre 2016 Angeli di Varano
88/100 - € 9
Made from Montepulciano and matured in glass-lined cement vats. A distinct but not opaque prune-ruby color and a slightly rustic aroma if marjoram, juniper and cherry. The mouthfeel has a medium texture and a deep finish. The tannins are rightfully rustic.
Conero Riserva Stile Libero 2015 Angeli di Varano
87/100 - € 18
Made from Montepulciano and matured in barriques. A deep, eggplant-ruby color and following a pronounced woody note of whiskey, the bouquet opens with scents of black cherry jam and balsamic notes. The rich mouthfeel has tight tannins that need to relax and a dark chocolate note in the finish. This needs to age for a couple of years and is a wine only for those who love red with a modern style.
