The Syrah of Tenuta Montecchiesi

In the 1980s, the Del Cero family from Veneto acquired the Tenuta Montecchiesi estate in Cortona where production today is focused on Syrah, including their excellent Cortona DOC Klanis.
The Del Cero family was originally from the region of Veneto and it was there that they began to produce wine after the Second World War when Augusto Del Cero decided to fulfill his childhood dream on his return from the war. His sons Giuseppe and Dario decided to expand their winemaking activities and invest in Tuscany and in 1980 they bought the Tenuta Montecchiesi estate in Cortona, having understood the potential of this area.
The functional winery has a low environmental impact and some of the wines are made using the gravity flow method. Most of the grapes in the vineyards are Sangiovese but there are also other red as well as white grapes. Syrah, by now a symbol of Cortona, played an important role from the beginning and was cultivated using the head-trained method in a high-density vineyard with a pebbly and clay soil situated at an altitude of 300m above sea level. This choice proved to be positive in that it produced wines with class and a propensity to age. The clones were selected in France and the vineyard today has vines that are between 15 and 35 years of age.
Cortona Syrah Klanis 2012
92/100 - € 28
Made from Syrah, matured in barriers and larger barrels for 16 months and then aged in the bottle for at least eight months. The wine has an intact and intense ruby color and a broad and assorted aroma with notes of currant, blackberry, some light spice both sweet and dark and never invasive. The tight mouthfeel has fine tannins and an intense, flavorful and austere progression that leads to an elegant, juicy and very persistent finish.
Miralý Rosato 2018
87/100
A blend of Syrah and Sangiovese with an addition of Vermentino that matures for three months in stainless steel. A very clear, face-powder pink color and a delicately fruity aroma of currant and strawberry. The fresh mouthfeel is quite flavorful with citrusy notes of lime and a nice salinity in a slightly sweet finish.
VerSý in Rosa 2017
87/100
Made from Syrah with an addition of Vermentino (hence the name Ver – Vermentino and Sy – Syrah) from a single, biodynamic vineyard with head-trained vines and matured in stainless steel. The color is so pale it almost seems like straw-yellow with pink reflections. The smoky aroma has spice notes of saffron and fruity ones of melon. The mouthfeel is fresh, light and fragrant and quite flavorful.
