Pievalta joins Biodyvin

The Marche estate Pievalta, in Castelli di Jesi, has become a member of the international association Biodyvin, the Syndicat International des Vignerons en Culture Bio-Dynamique.
A new and important milestone for Pievalta: this winery in the heart of the Castelli di Jesi appellation and pioneer in biodynamic winemaking in the Marche, has become the first estate in the region to become a member of theSyndicat International des Vignerons en Culture Bio-Dynamique, also known as Biodyvin. It is an association that counts among its members Romanée Conti, Zind Humbrecht, Chapoutier, Domaine Leflaive and Clos de Tart, among others.
Founded in 1995 by a small group of winegrowers who wanted to share their experiences in biodynamic cultivation and create a forum for debate and instruction. Today, Biodyvin has 148 of the leading biodynamic producers in France, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland and Italy, where Pievalta has joined the company of the Tuscan estates Avignonesi (Montepulciano), Tenuta La Ripa (Montalcino) and Tenuta La Novella (Greve in Chianti).
All Biodyvin members have employed biodynamic methods to improve the fertility of the soil, to allow the vines to prosper and animal and vegetal life to find an excellent balance. By doing this, they believe the wines produced can fully express the land they come from.
“Practicing this method of agriculture is quite complex and to acquire the knowledge necessary to apply all the techniques involved can take years,” according to Alessandro Fenino, the enologist and driving force at Pievalta, along withSilvano Brescianini, the general manager at the Franciacorta estate Barone Pizzini (which controls Pievalta). “Adopting a biodynamic approach to winemaking demands an in-depth knowledge of its principles and being able to interpret and apply them in the vineyard. We are thus proud of this new acknowledgement that has added value to the whole appellation,” he added, implying it was not easy.
Pievalta was born in 2002 thanks to the foresight of Franciacorta native Barone Pizzini and his General Manager Silvano Brescianini who from the beginning opted for organic farming methods before converting a few years later to biodynamic ones. “For us,” Fenino added, “joining Biodyvin is an opportunity to better compare our wines with those of other biodynamic producers, also thanks to a dense program of tastings, encounters and training and updating courses offered each year”.
Pievalta Verdicchio has always distinguished itself for purity, detail and capacity to express the wine without any excessive bitterness.
For years among the best Castelli di Jesi wines (wine lovers will recall the 2010 and 2013 vintages of San Paolo reserve), its ace up its sleeve is Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Dominé. A mini-vertical tasting at the estate on March 20 showed that while the 2017 was a bit slender – in hot years this remains one of the best whites –it had plenty of rhythm, the 2015 achieved freshness in a hot year and the 2010 had very intriguing notes of honey and herbal tea.
