Alessandro di Camporeale panorama Belice

The Sicilian estate has come out with a Syrah cru wine from its historic Mandranova vineyard not far from Monreale.

A brief, 36-hour visit to Sicily, a moment of madness that occurs when anything has to do with Belice. This area was first devastated by an earthquake and then by reconstruction politics but it remains an austere, magnificent land that measures you up almost with hostility, observes you and allows you lose yourself its scars of splendid art, ancient and modern, of time suspended.

Aside from its territorial wonders, I am falling in love with Belice wines, which are rapidly gaining popularity thanks to new and old estates, a lovely reality of cooperatives and soils from which grow hectares of very interesting vineyards of both native and imported varietals found in the area. Although dating back to the early 20th century, the Alessandro di Camporeale estate has only recently achieved excellence thanks to the latest generation that has given a new impetus to the definition of their wines, building a lovely and rational new winery where their vision of the territory can adequately express itself.

The reason for our quick trip was the presentation of a new estate cru wine dedicated to Syrah: Vigna di Mandranova, from a vineyard situated in the area of Monreale in the province of Palermo. This is in upper Belice but the mixed soil is still limestone and clay, sand and marl. I, personally, find that the Syrah varietal is adapting wonderfully in Sicily and producing very different characteristics depending on the zone. Although the first vineyards favored the fruitier clones and were planted in warmer areas, the trend now is to cultivate this varietal in cooler zones and growers are preferring the clones that lean more towards spice to create fantastic and very territorial wines.

Alessandro di Camporeale’s latest creation is evidence of this.

Sicilia Doc Syrah M NR L Vigna di Mandranova 2016

95/100 - € 32

Made from Syrah grapes and matured for 12-15 months in barrels before aging in the bottle. The wine has a captivating ruby color and an intense and slightly smoky aroma with notes of dark flowers, red fruit like black cherry and sensations of Mediterranean shrub. The mouthfeel has a nice, non-muscular texture with a lovely progression thanks to very elegant tannins and a salinity you would not expect which channel the wine towards a finish of great class that is flavorful, elegant and very intense. A pioneering wine from a pioneering area.

Bottles produced: 4,000.

Sicilia Doc Syrah Kaid 2016

92/100 - € 17

Made from Syrah grapes and matured in barrels for 12 months. A dark, intense ruby color and bouquet with intense and slightly warm notes of dark fruit, current and blackberry. The bold and juicy mouthfeel has evident and still youthful tannins that in the dig into the dense progression and make the finish not perfectly relaxed. A muscular Syrah.
