Padelletti: a great history
Practically unknown to Brunello lovers, this estate deserves much more attention not just because of the level of quality it has achieved in recent years as much as for what it represents in the history of Montalcino and not just relating to wine.
The Padelletti family has been one of the oldest and most important families in Montalcino since the 13th century. Among their ranks are professors, engineers, adventurers, diplomats and lawyers who have left their mark on various Italian universities and important periods of Italian history related to Garibaldi and the unification of the nation. The have also been in the forefront of technological innovation and it was thanks to this family that Montalcino was the first Italian village to have electricity.
Their wine has had success in various international contests since the last century and they played an important role in the foundation of the Montalcino wine cooperative just before the 1920s (the director and co-founder of which was Biondi Santi), while in the 1960s the Padelletti family were among the founders of the producers’ association to protect the town’s wines. They then went through a period of technical lethargy due to the many commitment they had outside the world of wine and thus their winery did not benefit from Montalcino’s great technical and commercial surge.
Their most recent Brunello have improved greatly thanks to Susanna’s feminine touch. The historic winery’s aging barrels have been totally revamped with the employment of classic 25-30hl barrels, while fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats. The estate’s eight hectares of vineyards have a limited production of some 10,000 bottles and are situated near the village’s eastern walls.
