Messer Oto, an Aglianico del Vulture to drink by the bucket

Messer Oto is the ‘stock’ Aglianico del Vulture from the Cantine Madonna delle Grazie winery and this 2013 offers a lot of fruit and great drinkability
Sometimes you run across an unknown producer and immediately recognize the quality of their wines. This happened to me the other day during Fabrizio Libianchi’s MomoWines tastings, a very interesting event thanks to the level of participating producers. Among these was the Latorraca family’s Cantine Madonna della Grazie, a small winery in Venosa, in the zone of Vulture.
The grapes used come from vineyards in different areas in the Venosa municipality with altitudes ranging from 400 to 550m above sea level and that have belonged to the family since the beginning of the 20th century. However, it was only in 2003 that Giuseppe Latorraca began to bottle and sell his own wine, an activity he continues today together with his son.
Only Aglianico grapes are used to produce the area’s standard bear wine, Aglianico del Vulture, which at Cantine Madonna della Grazie is made in various versions. Messer Oto is the entry level or stock wine, made using only stainless steel, and it is the freshest and most drinkable. Liscone is the name of a vineyard and a wine that matures in barrels and is made from grapes grown on vines with an average age of 30 years. The grapes for Bauccio are also from the Liscone vineyard, but from vines are 50 years old and up, and it matures in barrels as well. Dragone d’Altavilla is their reserve wine that matures in barrels for an extra year. The winery’s production line is completed by two ‘treats’: a white and a rosé, both made with Aglianico grapes.
