Gragnano: Not just pasta

The Scala family has been producing olive oil, cherries and hazelnuts in Gragnano – a city known the world round for it pasta – since 1926. In 2012, the young Francesco Scala followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and began to produce Gragnano wine, which has long historic as well as family roots. In fact, wine jugs have been discovered that demonstrated how the wine was being produced before the eruption of Vesuvius in the 1st Century AC.
The vineyard that produces the grapes for this wine is about a hectare in size and is situated in the medieval hamlet of Castello, which is the highest in the municipality of Gragnano and in the middle of the Monti Lattari hills. No herbicides are employed and only organic fertilizers are used.
