Garofoli and its Verdicchio Spumante
Verdicchio is certainly not the first varietal that comes to mind for making a sparkling wine but tasting this Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Spumante Brut Riserva 2010 may convince you otherwise.
The Garofoli family is undoubtedly one of the standard bearers of quality Verdicchio wine in the world today. They also produce some very good reds but Verdicchio is what they remain most passionate about. This also because they are able to produced large quantities wines with unthinkable quality, as well as other versions, in much smaller quantities, of the highest quality. Podium, Serra Fiorese and Selezione Gioacchino Garofoli have boldly found their place among Italian favorites.
Their line of Verdicchio sparkling wines made using the traditional method is a case apart. They make four versions the difference basically determined by how long they sit on the lees: from a minimum of 36 months to a maximum of 240 months (20 years). Exceptional wines made with native grapes and not the standard international varietals.
Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Spumante Brut Riserva 2010
This is their sparkling wine made using only Verdicchio grapes and it is fermented in part in barriques and in part in their historic cement vats that have been used for over 100 harvests! The wine sat on the lees for 60 months. The color is a white-straw-yellow with yellow and green reflections while the aroma is distinctive of the varietal and you can tell it is Verdicchio from far away. The mouthfeel is very elegant with a thick effervescence and a truly pronounced, flavorful and almost brackish taste, nice persistence and great freshness. All this makes this a very versatile wine, especially suited for heavy and succulent dishes. I would avoid pairing it with light appetizers. Bottles produced: 12,000.
