Ludovico by Tenute Orestiadi

Ludovico 2012 Tenute Orestiadi from the Belice Valley is a balanced and sunny Nero d’Avola-based red.

Tenuta Orestiadi is the top quality line of Cantina Ermes, an expanding cooperative that has its core business in the Belice Valley, in Gibellina Nuova, although it supplier/members are from other parts of Sicily. The Tenute Orestiadi winery produces around 1.2 million bottles a year out of the cooperative’s nine million. The ties it has with its territory, however, are very strong as is the almost duty it feels to make the valley’s history known beyond the devastating earthquake that made it famous in 1968. They also want to make the new Gibellina a center for encounters and development to ensure that its new architectural treasures are not just a bridge to nowhere in western Sicily, where there is an increasing interest in winemaking considering its potential for success.

The winery is also a main sponsor and organizer of a lovely cultural festival that brings various Mediterranean cultures to Gibellina’s five squares with wines and food from countries bordering on the Mare Nostrum.

Ludovico 2012 will soon come out on the market and is quite impressive in that it is distinctly different from earlier versions having followed a most interesting style. The wine is dedicated to and named after Ludovico Corrano, the historic mayor and driving force behind the art-inspired new Gibellina that can be visited today.

A Nero d’Avola with a small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon that matures in barrels for over a year before being bottled and aging for at least three more years. The wine has an intense, intact ruby color with a complex aroma that has floral notes and light ones of yellow prune on a background of small dark fruit and light balsamic and spice hints. The rich mouthfeel has tannins that are balanced and sunny as is the flavorful progression all making this easy to drink. The finish is solid.
