Artimino, when Chianti comes from Prato
Tenuta di Artimino is famous for Villa Medicea and its Carmignano but their Chianti Montalbano is more than worth a try.
The middle week of February is historically dedicated to the previews of Tuscan wines, a week during which the region’s leading producers presented their wines to the press, sector operators and, at least in some cases, consumers. This year’s Chianti Lovers event drew over 4,000 wine lovers from Sunday afternoon well into the night.
We journalists were able to sample all the wines, in both blind tastings and non, sitting in comfortable chairs and served by hard-working sommeliers. Among the wines was the fragrant and pleasing Chianti Montalbano 2017 from Tenuta di Artimino.
Well-known for its beautiful Villa Medicea La Ferdinanda (AKA Villa dei Cento Camini – Villa of 100 Fireplaces), a UNESCO Heritage site since 2013 which is used for lhigh-profile events, Tenuta di Artimino is composed of 732 hectares countryside and hills, many of which are covered by vineyards and olive groves. There is also a hotel and an excellent restaurant with a view of Florence some 20 or so kilometers away as well as of the splendid panorama.
Wine production centers on two DOCG wines, Carmignano and Chianti Montalbano, as well as the DOC Barco Reale di Carmignano and three Vin Santo, including Occhio di Pernice.
