The seminar-tour ended in the hills above Teramo with this 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo cru. Luigi Valori set up this estate about 20 years ago and Gianni Masciarelli’s collaboration was fundamental in its development. This wine is the feather in the estate’s cap. Its grapes come from a single vineyard that is over 40 years old and the wine ages in new barriques for over a year. It has an impenetrable color and a warm aroma of black cherry under spirits and wild cherry, recalling a Kirsch, followed by waves of spice. The flavor also has a lot of fruit, especially black cherry, and great body. This is a ‘big’ wine, slightly rustic but that is what this grape produces, big wines that can age long with excellent characteristics, although elegance is not first among them.
There are a lot of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wines that cost nothing and are worth nothing, and this can be misleading, but the best are truly great wines.
