Dario Cavallo is a great big moustachioed giant of a man. He cultivates his vineyards (with their very old, low-yielding, typically Puglian bush-trained vines) with an absolute passion. The result is an extraordinarily powerful and unique Primitivo that often divides the opinions of tasters: there are those who love it, and others who mark it down. This ’07 is undoubtedly not his best-ever vintage; indeed, it doesn’t reveal much depth and doesn’t go much beyond an unfortunately rather generic pleasant sweetness of fruit. The nose, too, is rather one-dimensional and it doesn’t improve much even with time in the glass.
