Castelfranci is in the heart of the Taurasi appellation and Michele Perillo is the wine’s prophet. His Taurasi Riserva is always outstanding for its authenticity and respect for traditional winemaking methods and was named Red Wine of the Year in the 2017 edition of our Ultimate Guide to Italian Wine. A product of the 2007 harvest, this has everything it needs to be almost magical. The wine is made from Aglianico grapes and ages for four years in barrels of different sizes. It has an intense, almost dark and extremely youthful garnet color. The bouquet is surprising with its scents of violet, blackcurrant, smoky hints and notes of roots and damp earth, all composing an exceptional complexity that has nothing to do with innovative methods that seek to bring out spicy sensations which in this case would be totally inappropriate. But all this is nothing compared to the mouthfeel with its robust but not drying or aggressive tannins, in line with the most classic Italian stylistic tradition. It then evolves wonderfully with tension from the saline acidity and a rich body that is never heavy. The finish is incredibly long.
