This has been considered to be one of the world’s greatest sweet wines, if not the greatest, for centuries and the better vintages fetch extremely high prices at auctions. A blend of Semillon and Sauvignon, its color varies greatly depending on the year and I remember seeing a very old one that had an amber color that leaned towards brown which gave the impression that it had oxidized whereas, on the contrary, it was fully intact. Its legendary saffron aroma has made it celebrated among wine lovers but the floral and spice notes are also incredible. The mouthfeel is usually solemn and austere within its great sweetness.
