I remember when this wine was first presented and how there was a lot of interest and curiosity over a new wine from Fazi-Battaglia. Technically, the wine was the brainchild of the duo Porfiri-Bernabei, the first being the winery’s internal enologist and already its historic soul, and the second acting as an outside consultant. They shared the same approach to the use of barriques and, in fact, this 1993 has an aroma with distinct, sweet spicy notes of vanilla, almond crunch and cinnamon. However, time has smoothed any excesses and the bouquet now also has intense scents of yellow flowers, saffron and a balsamic touch of camphor. It all very intact and captivating. The mouthfeel has a wonderful impact and great versatility, nicely upheld by the acidity and a lovely salty streak. The wood does not cause problems and there is even a very interesting light tannins component. The finish is consistent with an after-aroma of caramel.
