In accordance with the regulations governing Faro, San Placido is a blend of 55% Nerello Mascalese, 25% Cappuccio and 10% Nocera with the remaining 10% Sangiovese and Nero d’Avola. The grapes come from two different areas with one close to the estate headquarters, where the soil is loose and terraced, while the other is at a lower altitude and is only 350m from the sea where there is more clay in the soil. The wine ages in 500-liter oak and chestnut tonneau and some barriques for up to 18 months. The enologist consultant is Nicola Centonze.
The wine has a ruby color and slightly orange nuances and the bouquet is very balanced, aristocratic, full and elegant even if not particularly intense. There are scents of black cherry under spirits, prune jam, a bit of leather, a lot of pepper and some anise. The harmony continues in the mouthfeel where the tannins are truly soft and although they stand out they are balanced by a pleasing acidity. Overall, a mature and full-bodied wine with a very long aftertaste which has an unexpected freshness at the end. A very good wine that is having increasing success which will only increase as the vines begin to age.
