This year gave birth to Edition Automne, when the richness of the season inspired Hervé Deschamps to create a cuvée that was a homage to the charm and vitality of the autumn. The Champagne has an intense, carmine-pink color, created by the blend of 45% Chardonnay from Cramant, Avize and Le Mesnil, 50% Pinot Noir from Mailly, Aÿ, Verzy and Roully, and 5% Meunier da Dizy, with the color given by 15% of the Pinot Noir from Vertus and Vincelles macerating on the skins. The 2005 growing season saw a rigid winter followed by a hot spring and a cool summer with the harvest saved by a sunny autumn. The cuvée was initially created for the important Japanese market, the first for Maison Perrier-Jouët, but then it also came to Italy. The inviting bouquet has notes of rhubarb jam and raspberry compote, iris and wild rose with a vein of aromatic herbs between Melissa and laurel. The mouthfeel is meaty and at the same time soft with a refinedness that incarnates the Maison’s style, with grapey sensations that delicately close with a finish distinguished by a smoky and saline hint. A Belle Époque in a class all its own.
