When you mention 2003 everyone remembers the sizzling summer, almost no one the perfectly balanced autumn that in Italy produced reds that were overall undervalued. The developed, black garnet color, much different from all the others, indicate we are dealing with the first mature wine of the group. This is confirmed by the nose, red fruit in gelatin, surrounded by oxidized secondary scents (dried figs, cane sugar, tamarind syrup), with spicy hints of nutmeg and sugared coffee. The taste is creamy and surprisingly taut, compact about this red fruit and meat. Those who do not like aromas that tend to be oxidized will find our rating excessive (but then they will have to explain why a 2003 Loreto Aprutino should smell like a Serralunga d'Alba), those who seek a pleasurable wine, an expression of the territory and year, will perhaps agree with us. Good for another two to three years at most.
