This 1860 Marsala comes from the baglio of Garibaldi follower Amodeo who had decided to close down his farm and the winery was abandoned for 30 years, with the reserves sold to the leading wineries. However, the leftovers remained in the winery and were preserved by his descendants in demijohns to which they may have added some cooked must. The wines were almost solid when Marco de Bartoli acquired them at the start of the 1980s and he began processing them by every year adding a little wine and a bit of alcohol. The result is extraordinary. The wine has a very deep and rich aroma with notes of rain-dampened rocks, dates, dried orange, candied fruits preserved in spirits, carob, tamarind, licorice root, thyme and dried medicinal herbs. The mouthfeel is unexpectedly full and fresh. Moving.
