The second devastating emotional experience of the day, perhaps the greater of the two. A prime example of style for a 'supreme wine'. Its grapes come from a small vineyard of Montepulciano located at an altitude of 350-400 meters inside the zone of Cupra Marittima, the splendid amphitheater home to the Oasi degli Angelic estate. Its inspired winemaker, Marco Casolanetti, puts his boundless love in each bottle. He is madly in love with this over-100-year-old vineyard, that has a ridiculously low yield, and takes maniacal care of it, picking each grape one by one to make a barrique of pure nectar, that is usually blended with wine from five other plots of Kurni to provide the structure and boldness. In 2002 I convinced him to put aside for me six magnums and six 750cl bottles of the wine from the single plot, the only quantity of single vineyard wine produced each year. It is the most potent wine in the world with over 55% residue. But it is certainly not muck, its black color has reddish reflections, impenetrable for any kind of light. The aroma is almost terrifying for how intense and varied it is. Cherry, licorice and prune alternate with scents of red blood orange, followed by dark chocolate to create a fireworks display. The flavor, thanks to its thick tannins and record acidity, makes it a wine marvel, a rose in an iron fist. It would seem impossible to swallow given its structural characteristics, but somehow the wine disappears from the glass in a matter of minutes, making you wish it could always be full. A masterpiece, an almost never-ending source of emotions and surprise. Emotionally I would give this a rating of 100 but having drunk the following vintages, that are even more bold and vigorous, I give it 'only' a 98.
