Il Castagno 2009

100% syrah. This is the estate's showcase wine, one that has aged two years in barrels of which one third are new wood and the rest being used for the second and third time. The bouquet is bold and varied with spicy scents of pepper and tobacco standing out along with those of roasted coffee and balsamic and salty whiffs. In the distant background are muffled scents of blackberry and ripe black cherry. The taste is soft and full-bodied, a wave of spices, from cloves to juniper berry along with juicy and dark fruit nuances. The tannins are nice and soft but a bit prominent while the finish is balsamic and long with some tea leaf in the aftertaste.
