This may be blasphemy (even if confirmed by a certain Monsieur De Villaine) but I think this is, the monopole aside, the most expressive wine of the domaine and the best Burgundy of this cru. In a ‘classic’ year, it has the color you would expect from a great Pinot Noir that has bottle-aged properly: an intact red with an orange edge. The ethereal scents recall the Orient and the aromatic profile fluctuates between acute and reflective notes with the citrus appearing and disappearing, while the spice component is always there but changing and the fruit is still crispy and intense. When you taste the wine you understand why this Maison is so important, great and legendary. The mouthfeel is almost meaty, with silky and lively tannins and an unending persistence.
