This is a Roman wine, made from grapes grown in front of Ciampino airport, near the Appian Way, in volcanic soil. It is a wine that risked extinction but instead has been ‘revived’ thanks to Alessando Jacopo Boncompagni Ludovisi, the great grandson of Prince Alberico who began production back in the 1950s. The blend of the grapes is different than it used to be (80% Grechetto and 20% Viognier) but the wine’s class has not changed. It ages on the lees for six months, in 10-hectoliter barrels of oak and chestnut following an ancient Castelli Romani tradition.
It has a clear and bright golden color while the very complex aroma is quite floral with gorse, gardenia and peonies then light notes of white fruit, above all peach and pear. The mouthfeel is meaty and soft, almost salty with Mediterranean tones.
