This was the first Fontodi wine made by Dino Manetti, Giovanni’s father, and Guido Socci, a legendary figure in Chianti Classico. It was made according to regulations that have since been surpassed but – after 47 years - the wine is a miracle and confirms the reasons why Panzano is a mythical place. The wine has a pale, transparent garnet color and an aroma from bottle aging with fungal and smoky notes and a balsamic touch. The bouquet then shifts towards scents of incense, tamarind and licorice. The mouthfeel is still very interesting and has a nice acidity, settled tannins and a lovely, creamy progression with an aftertaste of cardamom. And while the wine is upheld by its acidity, it is not mummified by it. A great difference in class compared to the Radda retrospective of few months ago, no matter what trendy pseudo-experts may say.
