The rating would have been higher if this wine did not show its age in full. The way it expresses the territory and its finesse are quite impressive. The color is a dark garnet, while the aroma is very complex yet fresh with notes of Tuscan cigar, fur, violet, iron and damp earth. The mouthfeel is rich and relaxed with a taste that continues the dialogue between the sweetness of the fruit, salt and secondary flavors. The finish is solid, peremptory and ‘detached’, the way the best wines form this area are. I might even say world wary. This 1998 Chianti Classico Riserva is one of the greatest I have ever tasted, although it will not last much longer. But if you ask nicely, Sean may even sell you a bottle.
