This was the first year that a more Nero d’Avola was used than Frappato, a 60-40 blend. The name Frappato derives from ‘fruity’, while local farmers used to call it Nero Capitano. At the time the grapes were not picked until they were all ripe, with the risk that some were overripe with the subsequent consequences, including less acidity. The wine has less backbone and some warm traits already in the aroma that make it quite dense and a bit ill-flavored. All smoke and no fire.
