Gaetana Iacono described the old winemaking methods as ‘genuine’. All the grapes were harvested and fermented together, with the presence of a small sugar residue which perhaps helped the wine hold up with age. Today it is an intriguing drop despite its initial imperfections. At the time the wine was a 50-50 blend of the two grapes, with the freshness and agile body of the Frappato perhaps dominating the balance. This wine has a brown color with an orange edge and a mushroom-like and dusty aroma that has been compacted by oxidation but which has a subtly elegant, floral potpourri background and a finish of tamarind and barley coffee. While undoubtedly mature, the wine has a certain aristocratic component despite the questionable winemaking methods used, and it is perhaps undervalued.
