Here is another wine from Castellina in Chianti but from an estate that is higher up with its vineyards at some 450m above sea level. This is the wine that is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot and the addition here was not only to add color but also to tone down the acidity of the Sangiovese in order to make a softer wine. It is thus a more ‘modern’ Chianti also because of the use of French oak for aging. The color is deeper, the aromas more fruity, especially red fruit, and there is some spice. The structure is quite strong, also thanks to a greater tannic component that came from aging in wood. Nevertheless, the tannins are velvety making this altogether a balanced and elegant wine.
