As expected this 1997 has tanked. This vintage that was once so applauded by US critics today demonstrates all its shortcoming when it comes to aging. It is a classical example of what naturally happens to a Brunello when the growing season was too hot. The intense garnet color is nice, while the aroma is typically sharp and tends towards dried medicinal herbs, with intense licorice, dark tobacco and rosemary, while underbrush leaves closes the circle. The flavor is initially good but the progression is flawed and spoiled by tannins that are too rough and annoying. The alcoholic component that should helped the attack was disappointing. The finish was similar but not as intense and persistent as the nose.
