An exceptional vintage but a bottle opened with some trepidation due to over-expectation... a risk we willingly ran given the promise. The color was truly surprising given its 30 years of age. The aroma, a little baroque, had some notes of Mediterranean garrigue and roots, a lot of hides and damp earth. The taste is almost unnaturally velvety, an unusual softness upheld by a dignified freshness. The only flaw is a slight bitterness that lingers in the mouth, as if from burned wood. The length is relative but in any case this is a good example of this pioneering 'modern' Brunello, a much sought-after wine for the market across the ocean.
