Federico’s account leads him to talk about the stars in the sky, of Sicilian fishermen who use them to orient themselves and find their way back to port, and of highly evocative dialect terms. For this reason the second wine we taste is called A’ Puddara. It is from the 2009 vintage and is made from 100% Carricante. It spends some time in wood and harks back to the old Pietramarinas of Benanti (which, however, didn’t see any oak). It has very notable acidity and is very dry and forceful on the palate: it tastes of sage and other aromatic herbs. It continues to evolve in the glass and gradually acquires notes of considerable complexity. I think it may be notably long-lived.
