Here we are at Gioia del Colle, at a certain altitude, with subsoil that is very different from that of Manduria and with a different climate and greater variation between day- and night-time temperatures. Filippo Cassano is a skilled winemaker: he succeeds in making his wines extremely quaffable even if they do have a high level of alcohol (almost 17% in this case). This vintage seemed to me to be less expressive, less radiant, let us say less focused than the magnificent ’06. Indeed, I don’t find so clearly expressed those typical bright, mellow, ripe notes, which are nevertheless not cloying, thanks to its very mineral character. For goodness’ sake, it’s a perfectly good bottle at an extremely fair price, but in other vintages…
