Comprensorio Pinot grigio delle Venezie Doc

In a difficult economic moment, the interregional Doc bottles in 2019 +34% on the previous year.

2019 represented a real challenge for the Consorzio delle Venezie, which had to face a very complex economic situation at the end of a campaign characterized by a 25% drop in production compared to the previous year (the result of the strong, but necessary, government measures on the supply that preceded the penultimate harvest). But in spite of this, the Triveneta denomination - which brings together the operators in the production chain of Pinot Grigio DOC from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Autonomous Province of Trento and Veneto - in December 2019 is among the best performing DOC at a national level with +34% and an increase of almost 58 million bottles sold in 2018, reaching a total of 223 million bottles and observing a good growth in demand at a time of market uncertainty.

Numbers of great importance for the Consortium, which - just a step away from the ministerial recognition and the official assignment to carry out the functions of protection, promotion, valorisation, information (spring 2020) and the relative erga omnes - has always winked at exports with an average of 95% of the bottled bottles crossing the border, and which loudly reconfirms the strong positioning of Italian Pinot Grigio Doc in international markets, driven - so far - by the USA, UK and Germany.

Despite the undoubtedly encouraging results, the Consortium continues to safeguard the economic value of the DOC - and a balanced distribution of the same across all sectors of the wine chain - by committing itself to maintaining the balance achieved in this latest marketing year. "The Denomination has not yet achieved the economic and social recognition hoped for and deserved, and on this we still have to work hard alongside the producers and the entire supply chain," says President Albino Armani and continues, "In 2019 the Pinot Grigio DOC was able to face a complex situation between the last two marketing years and achieve good results. The Consortium hopes to maintain this positive trend, continuing to row against the possibility of expanding production and avoiding the risk of price speculation in favour of a climate of commercial serenity. The key task of the denomination through the Consortium is clear: a fully traced production chain is a guarantee for the producers themselves and, above all, a protection for the consumer".

By virtue of this, it will therefore be important to work alongside both the institutions and control bodies to defend the wine from attempts at fraudulent practices, which unfortunately are still being talked about in recent reports, and together with the Northeast Denominations which, like the Doc delle Venezie, protect the origin of Pinot Grigio and manage its quality. Having evaluated both the production data and the outcome of the marketing of the last campaign, the Consorzio delle Venezie, in view of the next harvest, will coordinate for a consolidated management of the reclassifications with the other protection consortia and trade organizations in order to encourage quality production that respects the environment and is more in line with the production potential of Pinot Grigio. "The feeling is very positive", this is what emerges from the last Board of Directors of Doc delle Venezie which took place at the beginning of January. "There are all the conditions to face the next marketing campaign with optimism and greater production sensitivity".

At the same time, the Consortium intends to work to improve the positioning and perception of the DOC, both in the domestic and international markets, working on strengthening the value of the identity of Pinot Grigio and focusing the headlights on the production area and terroir, the main factor that distinguishes it from the variety produced in the rest of the Boot.

Precisely with a view to strengthening the identity and sense of territorial belonging, the institutional headquarters in San Vito al Tagliamento (PN) will be inaugurated on 31 January next, bringing together the major players in viticulture: the three Consortia for the Protection of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Grave and Venice Doc wines, as well as the Control Bodies Ceviq, Valoritalia and Triveneta Certificazioni.
Finally, the Consortium is ready to start with the rich programme of promotional initiatives for 2020, which will already bring the DOC to the French tasting stalls of the second edition of Wine Paris/Vinexpo (10-12 February, Paris) in February, to continue with the usual events of Prowein in March and Vinitaly in April. "We intend to maintain and possibly strengthen our 'guiding role' to guarantee both producers and international consumers an effective promotional offer, continuing to take part in new and consolidated events and events of international appeal in every part of the world - from the USA to Japan to Northern Europe - which represent important opportunities to meet and exchange ideas with the specialised public of buyers, the press or professionals in the sector," explains Nazareno Vicenzi, Marketing and Promotion Manager of the Consortium.

Greater attention to the national market also compensates to a very slight extent for the concerns of the DOC that, due to Brexit, are now falling on the United Kingdom, where, moreover, already in 2019 exports fell slightly by 5%.
