Michael Broadbent

Yesterday, at almost 93 years of age, Michael Broadbent, English, for years director of the wine sector at Christie's, journalist and writer, Master of Wine, died.

Broadbent had been considered an undisputed authority in the wine world for decades. In 1952, at the age of 25, he began working in the wine industry and in 1960 became Master of Wine. A few years later, in 1966, he joined Christie's auction house where he spent his entire career: he remained there as director of the wine department until 1992 and continued to advise until 2009.

A long-time contributor to Decanter magazine, Vinum and Falstaff, he wrote several books including The Great Vintage Wine Book, with over 6,000 wines described. Among other positions, he was chairman of the Master of Wine Institute in 1970, president of the International Wine and Food Society in 1986, president of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) from 2007 to 2009.

It is believed that his tasting notes, stored in over 140 notebooks, exceed 90,000 wines tasted and judged with a rating from 1 to 5 stars.
