Rapporto Ismea-Qualivita 2019

According to the Ismea Qualivita 2019 report just presented, PDO PGI wine was worth 8.9 billion for bottling, with exports reaching 5.4 billion. The PDO PGI STG food sector is also very good.

The Italian #DopEconomy confirms itself as a fundamental and undisputed driver of the agri-food districts of our country. This is certified by the XVII Ismea-Qualivita Report which, in its analysis of the 2018 production data, registers a further growth that is part of the trend of the last ten years for the Food and Wine PDO PGI sector, with a production value of over 800 Geographical Indications that for the first time exceeds 16.2 billion euros (+6.0% in a year) and with exports exceeding the threshold of 9 billion euros (+2.5%), thanks to the work of over 180,000 operators and the commitment of the 285 recognized protection consortia.

#DopEconomy: the weight in the Italian agricultural economy

The value of 16.2 billion euros of PDO and PGI certified food and wine production in 2018 is +6.0% compared to the previous year and confirms an uninterrupted growth trend over the last ten years for the sector. An increase of one billion in a single year in the value of production for the Italian Food and Wine DOP IGP, with the #DopEconomy that arrives to provide a contribution of 20% to the overall turnover of the national agri-food sector. Growth driven by the performance of the wine sector (+7.9% production value of bottled wine), but the trend in the food sector is also excellent (+3.8% production value).

PDO PGI exports: a leading role for quality Made in Italy products

The PDOs and PGIs for food and wine consolidate their leading role of "made in Italy" food quality abroad, with a sector export that for the first time reaches and exceeds 9 billion euros in 2018. A growth that is worth +2.5% in a year, maintaining a stable 21% share in Italian food exports. The greatest contribution to this result is provided by the wine sector with a value of over 5.4 billion, while the value of PDOs and PGIs in the agri-food sector is more stable, at 3.6 billion for +1.2% per year.

Territorial impact: widespread value between small production realities and large districts

The analysis of the territorial economic impacts elaborated in the 2019 Ismea-Qualivita Report, shows how all the provinces in Italy have an economic impact due to the GI food and/or wine supply chains, a system that characterizes the whole country even if the concentration of value is strong in some realities: the first four regions for economic impact are located in Northern Italy and concentrate 65% of the GI production value and the first five provinces exceed half of the total value generated at national level by the Food and Wine PDO PGI supply chains. There are five regions with a value of over €1 billion generated by GI.

Food PDO PGI STG: first time value over 7 billion, export +218% since 2008

A new record for the Italian PDO PGI STG agri-food industry, which in 2018 reaches 7.26 billion euros in value of production and grows by +3.8% compared to the already positive 2017, with a trend of +43% since 2008. The value to consumption equal to 14.4 billion euros confirms the result of the previous year, while the growth on the export front continues, reaching 3.6 billion euros for the Food IG segment, for a +1.2% on an annual basis with the PDO PGI agro-food exports, which have registered a growth in value since 2008 (+218% in total). One third of exports in value terms are to non-EU countries (33%), while the main markets remain Germany (20%), USA (18%) and France (15%).

PDO PGI wine: 8.9 billion in bottled value, export 5.4 billion.

Great growth also for the production value of bulk GI wines at 3.5 billion euros (+9.1% on an annual basis), with bottled wines reaching 8.9 billion euros (+7.9%). Total production remains below the threshold of 25 million hectolitres with opposing trends between PDOs exceeding 16 million hectolitres (+7.4%) and still PGIs at 8.3 million hectolitres (-10.3%). The transformation of some PGIs and the introduction of new PDOs have helped to establish them in the national geographical and quantitative structure. Exports are still good, reaching 5.4 billion euros in 2018 (+3.5%) out of a total of 6.2 billion of Italian wine as a whole: PDO PGI wines represent 74% of total Italian wine exports in volume and 87% in value.

PDO IGP STG in the world: more than one in four products is Italian

At the end of 2019 Italy confirmed its world record for the number of products certified with 824 DOP, IGP, STG in the Food and Wine sectors out of a total of 3,071: more than one product out of four registered as DOP, IGP, STG in the world is Italian. In 2019, 32 new GIs were registered in the world, 24 Foods (including Olio di Puglia IGP in Italy and 8 wines (including Nizza DOP in Italy), with the highest numbers in Spain (+7), Croatia (+4), United Kingdom, Italy, France, Greece, Austria, Romania (+2). In 2019 Italy reached the threshold of 300 Food PDO, PGI, TSG products: this too is a world record (the second country is France with 251 Food GI products).
