A consultation on issues related to organic wine will be launched within a Technical Table of UIV that will be convened to examine and deepen issues of common interest.

Protecting and improving the environment: this is the primary objective of the partnership just signed between FederBio, the national Federation that for over 27 years protects and enhances organic and biodynamic agriculture in Italy, and UIV - Unione Italiana Vini, the most representative association of the national wine sector.

To preserve and increase plant biodiversity also through the optimization of "Made in Italy" food, to focus on the quality and authenticity of wine produced in Italy with organic and biodynamic method, regulated and certified, to support the internationalization of Italian companies in the wine sector. These are the other issues at the heart of the agreement between the two organizations.

The various issues related to the production of organic wine will be dealt with within the Technical Table of UIV already activated. In addition, the parties, as necessary, will consult to define together project initiatives, popular, technical, educational and promotional in Italy and abroad that may also take place within fair systems of the agro-food sector.

"This agreement concluded with the Federation representing the various sectors of Italian organic wine demonstrates the willingness of Unione Italiana Vini to promote the excellence of Italian wine in all its aspects and to constantly adapt to the new sensibility of consumers who are increasingly attentive to sustainable consumption and respectful of the environment. In its partnership with Federbio, UIV will bring its technical expertise to all areas of organic wine production," explained Ernesto Abbona, President of UIV.

In the last eight years, Italian organic viticulture has more than doubled (+ 107% from 2011 to 2018), and with an incidence of 15.8%, Italy is the leading country in terms of the share of organic vineyards in the total area under vines. According to Sinab data, organic wines and sparkling wines registered an increase both in turnover (+38.6% in 2018) and as a share of the total sector with an incidence of 1.4%. In the first eight months of 2019, sales of organic wine in large-scale distribution reached 35.2 million euros, with an exponential growth of 363% compared to 2016 (Source: Osservatorio Bio Nomisma).

"Organic farming is increasingly identified as an advanced method that contributes to enhancing the quality of wines, particularly when we talk about wines linked to the territory, even in small denominations. Given the complexity and vastness of the development objectives of organic and biodynamic national wine growing, it is important to activate forms of collaboration and synergies such as that with the Italian Wine Union. This agreement aims to preserve and improve the quality of the rural environment and strengthen the competitive capacity and innovation of Italian companies in the sector through the development of organic farming," said Maria Grazia Mammuccini, President of FederBio.
