Addio al produttore langarolo Pio Boffa proprietario della Pio Cesare di Alba

Because of Covid-19, Pio Boffa, owner of Pio Cesare winery, producer of excellent wines in the Langhe area, died. The news spread this morning.

It is with great sorrow that we are this news. Piero Boffa was a friend of the editor Daniele Cernilli and of all of us at DoctorWine. We knew he was sick with Covid-19, that it was serious, so in a sense the news was expected, but hearing it arrive is always another thing. Pio Boffa was hospitalized in Verduno since two weeks and his condition was critical. This morning the news that the virus has taken him away.

Pio Boffa was 66 years old and had been the head of Pio Cesare winery in Alba for a long time, heir of the founder (Cesare by name and Pio by surname), he represented the fourth generation of the family. For his wines he had kept substantially traditional styles and had continued to propose wines of exceptional longevity. Owner of excellent vineyards, he had confirmed the name of Pio Cesare as one of the greats of Langhe tradition and he had constantly renewed himself by offering a range of wines with an elegant style in which stand out the Barolo from Ornato vineyard in Serralunga and Barbaresco Il Bricco.  Its ancient cellars are the only ones still existing in the historical center of Alba. Just this year, the winery to which he had dedicated his life celebrates its 140th anniversary.

Goodbye Piero, may the earth - your earth - be kind to you.
