Bottaia Duca di Salaparuta

A project deeply bound to the dynamic island of Sicily.

Genuinely Sicilian. As Duca di Salaparuta nears its 200th year, the winery proudly presents the thirty-fifth harvest of its most iconic wine: Duca Enrico. The label embodies the two souls of this winery – an innovative spirit and a deep bond with Sicily and its history – and gives life to a fascinating project centered on continuing an impressive wine heritage.

In 1984, Duca Enrico was Duca di Salaparuta’s first and most important tribute to Nero d’Avola, a rough yet bold grape that has made Sicilian viticulture known to the rest of the world. At a time when the potential of this variety was not yet recognized, Duca di Salaparuta decided to vinify a 100% Nero d’Avola for the first time, inaugurating a new era of Sicilian winemaking. This is how Duca Enrico came to life: the result of the desire to produce an outstanding Sicilian red wine that can rise among the top enological expressions from all over the globe.

A bet to bring out the strength of Nero d’Avola by selecting the most suitable territory in central-eastern Sicily, choosing specific areas, and showing Duca di Salaparuta’s winemaking prowess. This entailed the involvement of undisputedly brilliant enologists in the project: Franco Giacosa, Giacomo Tachis, and Barbara Tamburini – who currently guides the winery – just to name a few.

Duca Enrico Sicilia DOC 2019 marks a new chapter of a rich history that has underwent continuous evolution and recounted numerous souls. The label is made with grapes from Tenuta di Suor Marchesa in Riesi, situated in the countryside of central-eastern Sicily. Duca Enrico Nero d’Avola vineyards stretch for less than five hectares and are still trained using the ancient Sicilian alberello technique. The unique features of this little piece of land endows Duca Enrico with its distinct characteristics: elegance, power, complexity, and longevity.

In these hilly, white, and largely calcareous soils, the warm sun and favorable ventilation offer optimal agronomic conditions, enabling Nero d’Avola to bring out its utmost expressions and give life to exceptionally refined wines distinguished by pleasant flavors and rich aromas, such as Duca Enrico.

The 2019 harvest

The year was characterized by a cold winter as well as a very cool and rainy spring. More generally, the various stages of grape development have been delayed by about ten days compared to the average of the past years. Rainfall in late summer (at the beginning of September) contributed to the regular maturation of the grapes, which were harvested in the third week of September.e.

Organoleptic profile

100% Nero d’Avola, the wine embodies the island of Sicily and the people who have worked on this brilliant and composite project that looks towards the future. Fascinating, harmonious, and refreshing: Duca Enrico continues to take Nero d’Avola to the next level, yielding a delicate yet lively palate anticipated by scents of small red fruits and evolving spicy notes, revealing an incredible potential for evolution..
